Gotha 1847

Ethnographische Karte von Europa
[H. Berghaus – Wolg]
Justus Perthes

Description

Following the publication of what can be considered the first thematic atlas (Döring, Prusia, 1827-28), we bear witness to the birth of what can be considered the first “scientific” atlas. First suggested by Humboldt in 1827, Berghaus engaged between 1838 and 1848 in his Physikalischer Atlas, a set of thematic maps accompanied by profusion of explanations. His ethnographic maps of Europe describe with detail the presence of the “Basken”.
