Description
In the second half of the 20th century, financial institutions, such as Banco Bilbao, began to advertise their branch network by means of a map showcasing the territory in which they operated. It was followed by the Banco de la Vasconia, with headquarters in Iruñea, publishing maps with which it decorated all its branches. The coat of arms of Navarre occupies a central position, supported by the Tree of Gernika and a background of seven mountains, copying the shield of the 19th century Euskal Elkargoa of Navarre, an emblematic Basque Culture Association. In 1927, the Federación de Cajas de Ahorro Vasco-Navarras was established, the Federation of Savings Banks of the Basque Country, comprising eight entities, two per province. They contributed to an image of unity of the peninsular Basque Country, patronizing magazines like Vida Vasca (“Basque Life”), or releasing maps covering the entire Basque area. The savings bank from Iruñea, Caja de Ahorros Municipal de Pamplona, or the savings bank Kutxa from Donostia, were among these institutions. Later, the present-day Laboral Kutxa kept adding to the cartographic unity of the Basque Country.
